Fire, yesterday, gutted a section of the popular Ekeki Motor Park
in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, leaving two persons injured.
Similarly, the state secretariat of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC,
in Rivers State, located at Igboku Street, D-Line in Port Harcourt was also
razed by fire yesterday.
Shops, goods and cash worth millions of naira were destroyed as
owners of stalls at the park watched helplessly.
Eyewitnesses said the inferno began at 8a.m. as a shop owner
attempted to switch on his power generating set.
In Port Harcourt, the fire, which engulfed the building at 4a.m.,
razed all the administrative offices and destroyed all the union’s documents.
Some people in the area said the inferno was ignited from an
electrical spark, but an eyewitness, Mr. Ovundah Bekee, and Personal Assistant
to Rivers State chairman of NLC, Mr. Chris Oruge, said: “I was alerted about
the fire at the office around 5a.m.
“I think it is an explosive that may have been detonated there. It
is a deliberate act.
“I had to call the state fire service. When they arrived, they
could not do much because the building had already been burnt down.”
